Been seeing a lot of movies recently – hey I live in LA okay! I consider myself more of a book person, but I also want to have friends, and going to movies is a lot more of a social activity.
Anora! What a film! My roommate saw it twice and even got a shirt. I don’t think I’d go see it again, but I was really glad I saw it.
It’s about an erotic dancer named Annie who lives in Brooklyn who wins the stripper lottery when she dances for Vanya, the son of a Russian oligarch, who she then ends up marrying!
There was a lot of sex, very pleasurable sex, which was fun and a fantasy, and it was at first every boy’s dream. Playing video games, smoking weed, fucking all the time, and listening to rap music. Oh these privileged boys who never have to grow up.
Annie was a bad bitch and a fighter, she wanted a better life and she was gonna use what she had to make that happen. I was reminded of Cardi B, who also started off as an erotic dancer.
While I really respected Anora, I was annoyed that it was a man who broke her heart and a man who held her at the end as she cried, despite her sister being in the house. In my experience, it’s usually my sister who holds me as I cry because most men don’t think a crying girl is sexy.
I was gripped into the movie and thought it was a great social commentary and really played out the sequence of events as realistically as possible. I laughed to myself as this obsession with “fallen women” is not new, it is timeless remembering the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their fallen women who they painted and gave permission to be artists, such as Elizabeth Siddal – a sex worker who features as a model of many of Dante Rossetti’s famous paintings.
Overall, glad I saw it and would recommend a watch.
