Letter #2: Feelings

Dear Sister,

In High School I felt a lot of feelings. Some good, some bad. I felt a lot of stress and anxiety, and I felt like I didn’t fit in. There is a line in my journal where I said that I felt like everyone at school was a string of Christmas lights, and I was the one light bulb turned off. I hope you don’t feel that way ever, but if you do, it is okay. There is no right and wrong thing to feel. Remember my favorite quote of all time ever by Dr. Seuss?

“Be who you are and say what you mean because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” (ahah I will leave it twice because it is my mantra!)

Like Daniel was saying, High School is about finding good friends, best friends! People who understand you, who want what you want. High School is the time to explore and try new things, to figure out who you are and what you want by trying. I spent most of high school just thinking about what I wanted to try, but not actually trying or asking.

I learnt most importantly at school that if you want to try something, you have to ask! And if you don’t tell people how you feel, they do not know how you feel. Sometimes you have to confront people, you have to let them know how you feel, communicate with them, especially if you have an issue with them. You’d want them to do the same to you.

Sometimes I felt very happy in High School. One time at Madison’s house when we were making homemade spaghetti, Maddi pointed out that I had an eye lash- and she said, ‘make a wish’. I told her I didn’t need to, I was so happy right now. But for some reason, that all changed. My happy bubble burst, and I realized I wasn’t happy. My friend group changed, a lot. We made a joke that it was like cell division, as the circle slowly went from one big circle into three smaller ones.

I loved basketball, track, and XC. I loved being part of a team. It was so fun, and we had such great memories. We were always laughing during practice.

But I guess, in the end, you just have to listen to yourself, to your soul, and what it wants. Just go for it! Don’t let cliques or friendships stop you from exploring. Just be safe, be respectful, and be happy!

Love,

Sammy
