These amazing humans
On the cusp of adulthood
So much change
Transformation
Overwhelming, terrifying.
And we are here on this island
Snorkeling to see garibaldi,
Sheephorn crabs, sea slugs
Kayaking to caves
Song of sea lions
And diving pelicans
Hiking to bald point
All that blue,
Dolphins and dreamy vistas
In this little cove
Fox landing
Idyllic, utopic
Far away from society
Its own society
22 instructors who live here full time
As kids come in and out
So far away
The buzz of city falls away
Can hear your own thoughts
Life on pause
And you can process
So nice to leave your narrative
To be somewhere else
To be a traveler
To experience something new
To be a witness to someone else’s new
To be a protector and guide
To be the chaperone and not the student
To be surrounded by vibrant potential
energetic adrenaline
To miss all that wonder and hope and joy
Before the world knocked you down
Before you learned how to get back up
Before you learned this life is a constant battle
And you are a warrior
