Los Feliz Writers Festival 2026 – Getting Involved!

August 19-23, 2026

The Los Feliz Writers Festival 2026 is going to take place August 19-23, 2026.

I am looking for more people to get involved and create the dream-team! Currently all work is volunteer, however, we are working to apply for grants and find donors who believe in our mission and have the ability to support. By 2030, our goal is to be truly sustainable in all meanings of the word.

I have envisioned the different roles and responsibilities and created a draft! See below! This may be updated as needed.

Our public planning committee meetings will take place:

  • July 8th, at 8:30pm to 9:30pm, Big Bar Alcove after Shut Up and Write in Los Feliz
  • August 5th from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, Big Bar Alcove after Shut Up and Write in Los Feliz

Festival Coordinator(s)

(80 to 150 hrs from June to August) $3000 in kind donation

  • meet weekly in-person with co-coordinator to ensure on the same page, if a co-coordinator is selected.
  • attend Los Feliz Neighborhood Council meetings as needed (at least 4) meetings
  • attend our weekly Shut Up and Write in Los Feliz in July and August (at least 8 events)
  • reads and signs off on emails sent about the festival (at least 2 emails)
  • attends and supports at all 8 events for the festival as needed as point person
  • supports writing and applying for grants
  • attend all planning committee meetings 
  • attend editorial meeting for the Radically Human zine print version and launch party curating
  • Open to giving and receiving feedback respectfully and using disagreement protocols for community psychological health and safety
  • Able to collaborate, advocate and negotiate so all stakeholders involved have their needs met and that we as an organization remain in alignment with our mission and values.
  • Must keep track of all hours and work done in order to ensure transparency, as well as motivations and money taken/spent.

Planning Committee: 

(8 hours of volunteering) $160 in kind donation | $1,600 total

  • Attend at least two meetings from 8:30pm to 9:30pm after our Shut Up and Write in Los Feliz meeting. These are public and anyone can attend and give feedback, however, only planning committee members have the ability to vote.
    • July: we will review all the Festival Event Proposals and vote on what events we would like to offer spots at the festival
    • August: we will discuss PR and marketing for the festival, and finalize volunteers
  • Share about Los Feliz Writers Festival, be listed on our website as a member of the planning committee
  • Open to feedback and using disagreement protocols for community health 
  • Ideally represents all the different forms of writing and perspectives in the community (Poetry; Short story, novel, novella; Personal essay and memoir; Screenwriting; Playwriting; Songwriting; Journalism; Academic writing; Comedy/Humor/Satire; Comics and graphic novels) and (teens, parents, seniors, single, married, sexuality, gender, ability, etc!, veterans, race, ethnicity, religion, political)
  • Help greet people at the Voice of Los Feliz event
  • Vote on the event facilitator proposals as well as Festival Coordinator(s) position and other administrative roles as needed
  • Support on grants and funding, as well as giving feedback on festival
  • Ability to share events with the Los Feliz Writers community

Event Facilitator: 

(6 hours of volunteering x 13) $120 in kind donation | $1,560 in for all events

  • Attend a pre-event meeting (45 min) with coordinator to confirm details/logistics for your event
  • Share about and promote the festival using word of mouth, social media, etc.
  • Design, plan, organize and facilitate a 2 hour writing event at festival or as part of our schools programming (elementary | middle | high school)

Festival Event Photographer: 

(2.5 hrs per volunteer session) $50 in kind donation | $500 total

  • Attend event, take photos, and send events on a drive to be used on social media and digital archive

Voice of Los Feliz Videographer: 

(2.5 hours at Voices of Los Feliz) $50 in kind donation 

  • Attend Voice of Los Feliz and record performances. Upload performances to be shared on social media and digital archive

Graphic Design: 

(2 hours per graphic designed x 3) $40 in kind donation | $120 total

  • Design graphics for the festival as needed with one round of feedback
    • festival poster
    • festival zine/program
    • festival event template

Communications Coordinator: 

(30 hours)  $600 in kind donation

  • Develops and implements communication strategy with social media, email, publicity, marketing, etc.

Environmental Consultant: 

(5-10 hours of volunteering) $200 in kind donation

  • advises on matters related to working to organize a zero-waste, eco-friendly festival. 

Political Consultant: 

(5-10 hours of volunteering) $200 in kind donation

  • advises on matters related to political issues in our neighborhood, city, country, and global community to ensure that we are part of the solution and taking direct action to make LA a city for everyone. 

Fundraising Coordinator: 

(30 hours of volunteering) $600 in kind donation

  • research, write, and apply for grants and when completed help with reporting, paying out, and funds
  • developing a strategy and maintaining relationships with donors and sponsors

Schools Program Coordinator: 

(30 hours of volunteering) $600 in kind donation

  • organizes and collaborates with event coordinators and local schools to host Common Core aligned writing workshops for students at elementary, middle, and high school

Festival Production Assistant: 

(2.5 hours per volunteer session x 10) $50 in kind donation | $500 total

  • Attend events 15 minutes before and after to welcome guests to the event and support festival coordinator and event facilitator as needed

Total Budget paying $20 an hour: 

 for staff (including one Festival Coordinator and Planning Committee)

Mutual Aid/Bartering as Financial Compensation (To Be Added To)

  • Meals provided at meetings – $15 per meal
  • Reading fee waiver for submitting to The Feminist Toilet and Radically Human – $10
  • Listed as a Los Feliz Writer on our database as well as on the 21st Century Writers with links to your website, substack, instagram, and services! – $50
  • Ability to have your events, classes, services, publications, etc. shared on the Los Feliz Writers Insta and email list – $20 each request with 2 week lead time. 
  • Name printed in the Radically Human zine as supporter – $25
  • Logo printed on Radically Human zine – $50
